Thomas G. McKinley

Thomas McKinley has over 35 years of venture capital investment experience with a successful track record of helping entrepreneurs create significant and successful enterprises. Tom joined Cardinal Partners as an advisor in 2008 and since January 2009 has served as a General Partner of the firm. Utilizing his over 35 years of technology investment expertise, Tom’s investment focus at Cardinal is in healthcare information technology, technology-enabled services, AI, ML as well as blockchain in healthcare. Most recently, Tom has been the founder and chairman of Prealize Health. It is a project in conjunction with Professors Arnold Milstein and Nigam Shah. Dr. Milstein is the head of Stanford’s Clinical Excellence Research Center (cross discipline center between Medical School, Business School and Engineering department). Dr. Nigam Shah is the thought leader of machine learning algorithm at Stanford Center for Biomedical Informatics Research (BMIR). Tom also has led the Cardinal investments in lifeIMAGE, a cloud-based medical imaging sharing platform for hospitals, physicians, and patients, and in Teladoc Health (NYSE: TDOC), a telehealth services provider of doctor consults to consumers. Tom currently serves on the Board of Directors of Cardinal portfolio company’s Prealize Health, lifeIMAGE, Teladoc Health and Sapphire Digital, a web-based physician directory and decision support tools for patient engagement and steerage platform.
Prior to joining Cardinal Partners, Tom was the co-founder and co-Managing Partner of Partech International. His investments, in the healthcare sector, while at Partech included Automated Healthcare (acquired by McKesson), Medicode (acquired by United Healthcare) and VISICU (NASD: – acquired by Philips), where he co-invested with Cardinal Partners.
Thomas has served on the boards of U.C. Berkeley’s Entrepreneurs Forum and the Western Association of Venture Capitalists (WAVC). He was an active member of the Health Management Academy (HMA), and an active supporter of the University of San Francisco’s Entrepreneurship Program. As an alumnus, Thomas maintains close ties with Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, as well as Harvard University, where he serves as class secretary and started the Harvard College i3 Innovation Challenge, an undergraduate startup competition.
Thomas received his A.B. degree in Economics from Harvard University, an MS in Accounting from the Stern School of Business at New York University and an MBA from Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
